SB 62 makes it to legislative session
Gov. Susana Martinez has sent a message that SB 62, amending the state's animal cruelty laws with stiffer penalties, be considered in the current 30-day legislative session in Santa Fe.
The amended bill, written by DACHS Vice-President Tom Townsend and board member Veryl Yarnes, is carried by Sen. Mary Jane Garcia. As this 30-day session is chiefly designed for budget matters, it remains to be seen what happens to this bill. If it doesn't make it through this year, it will be re-introduced in the 60-day 2013 session.
The Animal Legal Defense Fund, a national animal advocacy organization, recently ranked New Mexico’s animal protection laws at 46th out of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
Local prosecutors complain that the way current law is written doesn’t allow them to get convictions for the worst animal abusers.

Pets for Seniors Program offers incentives
Now, the vouchers come with the added incentive of free dog training and a bigger discount on senior dog adoptions. The Pets for Seniors Program helps pay the fees to the shelters for seniors age 60 and older who adopt a companion dog or cat from either _ including the pre-adoption veterinary exams, first set of vaccinations, and spay/neuter. There is no income limit to qualify. The voucher is worth $50 off at the ASCMV's adoption fee, which is $75 for dogs and $50 for cats. ASCMV pets are all microchipped, in addition to their vaccines and spay/neuter surgery. The voucher is also worth $50 off at Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary, where adoption fees are $50 for cats, $75 for kittens 6 months old or younger, and $85 for dogs. Age-appropriate shots and spay/neuter surgery are included.
28 'Home for the Holidays' adoptions Twenty-eight pets went to new homes on Christmas Eve, thanks to the "A Home for the Holidays" free pet adoption event on Saturday. People who adopted pets from one of the Animal Service Center of the Mesilla Valley’s three off-site adoption locations had their adoption fee covered on a first-come, first-served basis, courtesy of the Dona Ana County Humane Society (DACHS), which raised $1,995 for the event. An additional five animals were adopted that were not covered by the "A Home for the Holidays" fund, bringing the day's total to 33 animals adopted. “I think it’s outstanding that members of the DACHS board realize the importance of adoptions and getting animals in homes with love rather than sitting in a cage or a kennel,” said ASCMV Executive Director Dr. Beth Vesco-Mock. “We at the ASCMV greatly appreciate the effort.” |
